Double Dose >> Heelz n Wheelz (feb 22nd, 2012)
It was after one in the afternoon when a few members of Jamaican Tuner met up with Andrew from Ochi, Andrew from Mandeville and Jamar from St. Elizabeth. The trio came with an Arsenal of friends, no offence to my Chelsea peeps, but mentioned friends, brought to be mentioned machines. Skyline R33 GTR, R34 GTR, Silvia S14 and S15, BMW M3, Honda S2000 were just a few of the beauties that rolled up and burned some rubber as we marched into Lee-Sing Concepts’ “Heelz and Wheelz: Double Dose” car show held at the UDC Parking Lot in New Kingston. Wet ‘n Slide JMMC Dexterity #1 2012
Text by Dean Corrodus, Photos by Donovan Montaque
The Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) staged the first of ten dexterity events for the 2012 season at the ATL Bogue City Centre parking lot in Montego Bay on Saturday night, February 18. The night dexterity idea made a welcome return courtesy of ATL Automotive’s state of the art dealership facility at Bogue City Centre, representing industry leading brands Audi, VW (ATL Autohaus) and Honda (ATL Motors) and backed up by the prestigious Jaguar, Range Rover and Land Rover marques (ATL Britannia). The venue offered an attractive background for the exciting and entertaining wet tarmac format of this entry level of motorsports and saw huge cheers from the crowd in attendance when their favorite drivers displayed flamboyant skill and car control in maneuvering their vehicles around the cones that marked the course. Classic Car link up: Mandeville
Warm skies greeted Highway 2000 as we interrupted their conversation whilst heading to Mandeville.
Indicated, slipped into the right-lane and overtook a small band of nostalgic autos. It seems they were heading in our direction; the classic car club link-up at the Mandeville Golf Club.
Cars showed up one after the other during the course of the day. Mr. McFarlane, president of the ‘Classic Car Club’, was one of the first to park his reddish-orange MG Roadster in a spot accessible to a growing audience. In the same convoy as the MG, an E30 BMW followed shortly behind. It sported the 3.0L straight six of the E36 sitting cosily between the front strut towers. Salutations begun and laughs rang out like exhaust chatter from the robust Honda 750-four on display. Speaking of two-wheel terrors, a 1953 Raleigh motorized bicycle turned heads — quite the charmer. What stole the show for us was the 1951 MG TD, a car with more history than the Library of Alexandria; it has been a participant in many competitions internationally without showing any form of senescence. JMMC Sprint 2 report & results

King (left) and Powell share a handshake at the JMMC Sprint #2 after a close battle throughout the day
The second speed event of the 2012 season was held at the seaside Badda Badda Raceway in Richmond, Priory, St. Ann on Sunday, February 5, 2012. Although persistent rain over the last three days leading up to the event rendered a portion of the track unusable, some quick adjustments to the course were effected and the drivers entered in the national sprint championship took to the course in vengeance at just before 2 pm. The 2012 Honda Civic and CRV
An invitation was extended to the Jamaican Tuner Magazine for our presence at the unveiling of the 2012 Honda Civic and CR-V. Inchoate thoughts of scepticism brewed in my mind, just part of their plan to “butter up” the media. Nevertheless, I attended to formulate my own opinions.
“Service is the ATL mantra,” stated the ATL Autohaus brand manager, Judith Denton, as she commenced the Media Launch of the 2012 Honda Civic and CR-V. “Get ready for an ‘Unbeatable’ 2012!”. After introducing the qualities of ATL and their products, Mrs. Denton introduced Mr. Chris DaCosta, group General Manager of sales and marketing at ATL Automotive Limited. Mr. DaCosta sponsored a few sentiments before making way to Mr. Adrian Staicu, Service Support Representative for Honda of Latin America and Caribbean. Adrian revelled with much pleasure, about ATL and their esteem of going above and beyond for their customers. Continue reading
ATL Autohaus, ground breaking…
Featuring a star-studded line-up, the ATL Autohaus’ ground-breaking ceremony, held on January 18th, 2012, was nothing short of just that… ground breaking. Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and quite a few of the current state ministers were present; and in addition to these persons were members of the opposition including Mr. Andrew Holness and other dignitaries. This goes to show how embedded in our culture Adam Stewart has brought the German car manufacturer. Continue reading
The Shell Report: Wet & Slide Dexterity #5
The Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) brought the curtains down on its 2011 motorsports season when in association with the Montego Bay Motoring Club, they staged a successful Wet & Slide Dexterity #5 at the upscale Whitter Village Shopping Centre in Ironshore, Montego Bay on Tuesday, December 27, 2011.
The event got off to a 5pm start, with 27 competitors taking to the track laid out by clerk of the course Pernell Fitz-Coy. The tarmac surface was properly wet before each of the three single lap runs, with the competitors having a reverse grid for the 2nd run and then drawing numbers for the run order of the third. Before the two lap championship run, a 4×1 team relay was run with a merged Team Challenger/Mad Dem going up against Team Westslide in a best of three format.
Top Spot.
Taking the bus
Annoying sounds came from my blackberry, almost like a perpetual ping, however, this one was rather alarming. It was 6 am on the most despised day of the work week, well unless you’re the bill gates type and this signified forty additional high income earning hours. I’m not; hence this was just a miserable moment; like ‘latent heat’ in physics, that specific amount of energy to get out of bed was non-existent. I still have my job, for now, which means I made it…sort of. I passed grandma’s birds on the way out; I’m sure chirping sentiments of a colourful language as I strolled to my little boosted beauty. I started her up; she coughed a bit before easing into a uniform combustion cycle. I was ready to seize the day, KLUMP! What’s was that! KLUMP, KLUMP, KLUMP, I was in disarray, what was that unusual noise vastly different from the tummy tones caused by me lacking my prescribed cup of morning Nescafe. I came out armed with curiosity, carefully inspecting the civics peripheral. Just great! It turns out I was driving on pancakes; a thin layer of rubber separated my konigs from the suns freshly baked asphalt. With no spare tyre in the trunk and close friends not so close I had no choice I had to… take the bus! Continue reading
